While I love having the kosher lamp and wouldn't be without it, it could use some improvement I think. I bought one as soon as it came out, as reading in bed and having extra light on Shabbos was something I really wanted. It does what it is supposed to do, and it is a joy to have, but it isn't very attractive and the light is a bit harsh. Still, a must have for those who observe Shabbos.
A+ function, Failing in aesthetic and appealing design October 27, 2005 Friday PM (Los Angeles, CA United States) While this lamp is the perfect solution for me: I love to read in bed on Friday night, it shares enough light to do so and works easily to close, and make the room completely dark. It is truly an unattractive item. I would love to see a redesign of this product. Perhaps a sleek stainless steel look.
Form and function are both important to me, so I would like to suggest that you "outsource" the design component, and as long as its utilitarian function remains halachic there is no excuse for it to be this ugly. Given that..it is a necessity in our house and I am ordering 2 more!
Cute little device, has flaws... August 24, 2008 theskeptic (Jersey) I like this lamp. It's a stupid-simple idea hearkening back to the old kerosene lamps, but it's really a nice thing for us shabbos-observant folk. I've found it useful on many occasions already, because I don't have to worry about setting timers exactly for when people are going to go to sleep. This is nice, for example, if you have a guest sleeping over, and you'd like them to be able to "turn off" the light according to their own sleep time, and not plunge them into darkness in a strange environment. (You may still want to set a late-timer just to save electricity, so the lamp does not burn the whole night.)
My problem is that the light is fairly minimal, and the angle is *very poor* for reading. Generally, for reading, you want the light shining *down* on the page. However, this lamp is like having a bare bulb sitting right on the table next to the book. The angle of the light is wrong, and you are constantly distracted by the bright light inches from your eyes. So, it's really pretty bad for reading. I hope the company can address this in another version, and change the angle of the light projected.
My kids like it and it works fine, but it's UGLY June 29, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The lamp works fine, but it's amazingly UGLY. Metal painted to look like wood. Black or chrome would have been a better choice. The design will not win any beauty contests either. Maybe in Kosher Lamp 2.0?The light is a bit harsh because it's fluorescent (for Shabbat and also safety reasons,) but it will be economical to run. I can probably put a softer bulb in it. I put it in my kids' room and they are very happy with it. It really is a very clever idea and a convenience for people who want to read in bed on Shabbat, or just to adjust the light level. The ad copy suggests taking it when traveling, but it's a little too heavy to consider doing that unless you're driving. All in all, I wish I'd waited until they make a nicer looking version.
